Operational 4  is the minimum required level for Transport Canada. (More Information Click Here). However; English language level 6 minimum is mandatory for admission, this exam should be taking with IELTS. (More information click Here)  Please refer to Alberta Advanced Education guideline for proficiency scores (More Information Click Here). LR Helicopters goes beyond normal flight and ground training by offering international students:

  • Assistance English second language courses if required

  • Assistance finding suitable accommodation

Our staff includes speakers proficient in French, Italian, German, Portuguese and Spanish which can help you better communicate your needs or and problems (to be away from home it is not always an easy task and we do appreciate it) however all ground and flight instruction will be provided in English.

Medical requirements

Both the commercial and the private licences require a medical examination by an approved Transport Canada Medical Examiner (CAME). For commercial licence, a class 1 medical is required and for the private licence, a class 3 is required. The medicals includes a complete physical, eyesight exam, hearing exam, and EKG. Eyesight must meet the requirement set out by Transport Canada but does not have to be “natural”. The eyesight may be “corrected” to the required standards. All medicals should be completed prior to the commencement of flight training.

Student Visa

The immigration process can be difficult for foreign students and may change on a regular basis. Please see the latest requirements for foreign students here. You must meet the requirements of Canada Immigration Citizenship (CIC) criteria.

In order to study in Canada, you will need to obtain a Canadian study permit, which serves as a Canadian student visa for the duration of your stay. You do not need a Canadian study permit if your course or program lasts six months or less. Nonetheless, it may be a good idea to apply for a permit before you come to Canada anyway, otherwise if you decide you want to continue your studies in another program, you will need to leave Canada to apply for a study permit through a visa office.

Once you have a Canadian study permit, you can apply to renew it from within Canada if you decide to continue your studies. For full-time students registered at an accredited higher education institution, (L R HELICOPTERS holds this status), a study permit also allows you to work part-time on campus. You may also be able to work off-campuswork as a co-op or intern as part of your program, stay in Canada as a permanent resident or find work after you graduate.

Accommodation

L R HELICOPTERS is situated on the Springbank Airport site west of Calgary. There is no public transport to Springbank, therefore your own transport is required. This allows students to choose in what area they live. Some may choose the hustle and bustle of downtown Calgary with its lively nightlife, bars and restaurants. Others may choose the suburbs or even the nearby mountain town of Canmore. We will help you select the most appropriate accommodation for your needs and your budget. Wherever you choose to live, you can be sure of spectacular scenery, challenging flying and the natural beauty that the Rockies and the national parks have to offer.

Our location is ideal for both entertainment and recreation. Calgary has a big city night life as well as many cultural events throughout the year (downtown Calgary event calendar). If the great outdoors is more your thing, you will be spoilt with the abundant choices you have. From walking and hiking, skiing and snowboarding, hunting and fishing, climbing or just a drive to see the spectacular scenery, it’s all here on your doorstep. So much choice, endless possibilities, choosing your new place to live might just be the hardest thing to do!

Below are links for you to explore accommodation that may be available. You should remember that Calgary has an ever changing economic environment and that availability and cost may vary significantly with location.
